Embers in the Sky

This iconic image captures the Three Sisters mountains in Canmore, Alberta, during a vivid sunrise. These peaks are among the most photographed landmarks in the Canadian Rockies.

The Location

The photo was taken from the Three Sisters Viewpoint (sometimes referred to as the "Policeman Creek" reflection spot). This specific perspective is famous because it uses a small, calm pond to create a perfect mirror reflection of the peaks.

  • How to get there: Park at the off-leash dog park on Bow Valley Trail. Cross the road, go under the train tracks, and follow a short, unmarked trail for about five minutes to reach the water's edge.

  • The Peaks: From left to right, the peaks are known as:

    1. Hope (Little Sister)

    2. Charity (Middle Sister)

    3. Faith (Big Sister)

Why the Sky is "On Fire"

The dramatic pink and orange colors are a phenomenon called alpenglow. Because the Three Sisters face east/northeast, they catch the very first light of the morning. In the winter and shoulder seasons, the combination of low sun angles and atmospheric moisture often creates these intense, fiery displays.

Local Legend

Long before they were named the "Three Nuns" (and later the Three Sisters) by settlers, the Stoney Nakoda people called them Ĩ-ktomnĩ, referring to a traditional story about an "Old Man" who promised three sisters in marriage to get out of trouble
